AW Govt Fixes New State-Set Prices for Sugarcane and Rice

The central government has fixed new state-set prices for cane, aiming for stable sugar supplies.

Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said the government had approved a new "fair and remunerative" price of Rs 129.84/quintal of cane and it will be applicable all over the country.

The new price is higher than the centrally advised price of Rs 107.76/qtl, but lower than the price of Rs 170/qtl fixed by the Uttar Pradesh state.

Chidambaram also said the government would pay an additional Rs 50 for 100 kg of rice. India''s rice output is set to fall sharply after drought and floods this year, and a higher price is expected to encourage farmers to sell more grain to government agencies.
